When design and research are overtly linked, the practice of design becomes a
laboratory of experiences that attracts the most curious and the sharpest minds
to the field. Actively incorporating research into the design process provides a
range of fresh, exciting design opportunities and energizing collaborations.
Design supported by a research methodology aligned with the design
process becomes an active field that can inspire both its own practitioners and
the general public. The information generated from research supports both the
designer’s and the client’s needs to understand how a design strategy influences
the performance of the object, place, or space. It validates a design recommendation
using data, resources, and social scientific concepts.
A design research methodology is also an educational tool to mentor
young designers. By establishing systems that help young designers better
understand the human condition and/or how a design response may influence
a user’s experience or perception, for example, design research establishes a
mechanism to gain better insight into unique project specific goals.
